Grasse, France

Grasse, a town in the hills of southern France, is referred to as the “perfume capital of the world.” Its connection to the fragrance industry dates back to the 16th century. Originally known for leather tanneries, Grasse’s tanners began to hide the unpleasant smell of leather by scenting their goods with locally grown flowers.

The region’s climate allowed for the cultivation of jasmine, rose, lavender, and orange blossom. These flowers became the crux for the creation of high-quality, natural perfumes. By the 18th century, Grasse became the center of luxury perfumery, supplying raw materials to perfume houses across France.

Grasse still holds its reputation as the heart of the perfume industry by blending tradition with modern innovation. It’s home to various historic perfume houses, artisanal perfumers, and cutting-edge laboratories that work on creating sustainable, natural, and synthetic fragrance ingredients. There’s also the International Perfume Museum and schools to train future generations of perfumers.

Grasse’s legacy remains strong today, and its mastery of fragrance ingredients and artisanal techniques will ensure this town will maintain its influence around the world.
