Technology of Sprayers

It’s common to find sprayers in our daily lives, which includes cosmetic products like perfumes. What is the mechanism behind these sprayers for fragrance to spray out widely?

Perfume Atomisers

Perfume atomisers are small, refillable bottles that you can carry around and spray perfume at any time. Inside the bottle is a tube connected to a nozzle to release a small amount of fragrance when pressed. Once pressed, pressure pulls the liquid out of the bottle, which looks like it has been sprayed in our eyes. Perfume atomisers are created in a way where the same ratio of oil, alcohol, and water is released with every spray. Additionally, they are designed to spray in a smaller and direct area. Traditional perfume bottles have the same mechanism, but they have a wider spray area than perfume atomisers.

Bernoulli Principle

The Bernoulli Principle actually explains how atomisers work. The principle states that as the speed of a fluid increases, its pressure decreases. When you press the perfume, air rushes through the tube, which has a lower pressure than the surrounding atmosphere. This atmospheric pressure forces the perfume to move upwards in the tube.

This is a diagram of how the Bernoulli’s Principle works.

When we spray perfume onto ourselves, it’s rare we ever think about how the liquid inside the bottle comes out. Since you now know the mechanism behind how a perfume bottle works, try to see with your eyes next time the fragrance comes up the tube and sprays out onto you.
